Jürgen Schadeberg

Germany–Spain, 1931–2020

Jürgen Schadeberg (Germany, 1931-Spain, 2020) was a German-South African photographer who was fundamental in the history of African photojournalism. He documented apartheid and the daily life of racialized populations in South Africa. He portrayed figures such as Nelson Mandela and was the photo editor of the influential Drum magazine, from where he promoted a new African visual narrative. His work is a key testament to South Africa’s resistance, culture and transformation. In the late 1960s he moved to Spain where he made an extensive reportage on Malaga, documenting a country under dictatorship.
