Daidō Moriyama | 2016 marks a key stage in the author’s career, known mainly for his work in black and white. In these images he applies his characteristic style, loaded with rawness and fragmentation. He explores chaos, desire and the ephemerality of contemporary life, while maintaining a provocative gaze on Japan’s urban landscape.
Japan-Spain, 1938
Daidō Moriyama (Japan, 1938) is a key figure in contemporary Japanese photography. He trained assisting photographer Eikoh Hosoe and created a unique style, marked by are-bure-boke (grain, sweep and blur), characteristic language of the renowned magazine Provoke, of which he was part from the second issue. His work captures the rawness and chaos of urban life, with a fragmented and provocative look and influenced by pop culture, literature and Western photography, he reveals the complexity of post-war Japan. His work is part of the collection of important museums such as MoMA in New York or the Art Institute of Chicago.
