Serie Ordeal by Roses
Eikoh Hosoe | 1961 Photographic series created in collaboration with writer Yukio Mishima. This symbolic and theatrical portrait was one of Mishima’s last projects and represents his final vision of himself. Set in his home and loaded with baroque references, it fuses photography and literature in an intense artistic dialogue. Its impact and influence lie in the deep creative connection between the two authors.
Japan, 1933-2024
Eikoh Hosoe (Japan, 1933-2024) was a photographer known for his collaborations with writer Yukio Mishima and dancer Tatsumi Hijikata. He soon abandoned the documentary style that dominated postwar photography, adopting a more expressive and surrealistic language. He was a member of the VIVO collective and some of his works such as Barakei (“Ordeal by Roses”) or Kamaitachi consolidated him as a key figure of the Japanese avant-garde.
