Ikko Narahara | 1956-1958 Explores the boundaries between public and private in Japanese society. With an introspective approach, he captures urban scenes and landscapes, using photography to investigate the boundaries of identity, memory and space, and reflecting on the relationship between the individual and his or her environment.
Japan, 1931-2020
Ikko Narahara (Japan, 1931-2020) is considered one of the pioneers of post-war Japanese photography. In 1959 he founded, together with Shomei Tomatsu and Eikoh Hosoe, the VIVO collective, which marked a milestone in contemporary Japanese photography. His experimental and symbolically charged style opened up new possibilities in his country’s photography. He documented closed communities, such as monasteries or prisons, with the aim of understanding their structures and ways of life. During the 1950s he visited Europe and paid great attention to Spain and its traditions.
