Japan, 1931-2018
Takashi Hamaguchi (Japan, 1931-2018) was a photographer renowned for documenting urban and rural life in Japan during the postwar period. His work combines a humanistic approach with a critical eye on the country’s social transformations. Among the most representative subjects of his work are the U.S. military bases, the Niigata earthquake, student struggles and protests against the construction of Narita airport. His work has been recognized with awards such as the Prime Minister’s Prize at the Japan Mainichi Photography Exhibition.
