Serie Flower Rondeau
Nobuyoshi Araki | 1997 He shows wilted flowers as a metaphor for Eros and Thanatos, central themes in his work. Inspired by the floral offerings he observed in his childhood near the Jyokanji temple in Tokyo, he turns the act of photographing flowers into a ritual of resurrection. The flowers, on the verge of decay, reveal an intense and ephemeral beauty, charged with sensuality and spirituality, with color combinations that create a “floral sex scene,” as the artist describes.

Nobuyoshi Araki (Japan, 1940) is a photographer known for his extensive and controversial work focusing on eroticism, everyday life and death. His style combines the explicit with the intimate and questions the aesthetic and social limits of artistic expression. He has published more than 500 photographic books, making him one of the most prolific artists in the medium. One of his most personal and outstanding projects of his career is Sentimental Journey, a series documenting his honeymoon and the death of his wife Yoko Aoki.
