Japan, 1930-2012
Shomei Tomatsu (Japan, 1930-2012) was one of the most influential photographers of postwar Japanese photography. He documented the effects of World War II, the American occupation and the social changes in the country, with a raw and poetic style. In 1959 he co-founded the VIVO collective with Ikko Narahara and Eikoh Hosoe, contributing to the renewal of the photographic language in Japan, and was the forerunner of the renowned Provoke magazine.
