Serie Oh! Shinjuku
Shōmei Tōmatsu | 1969 Key work in postwar Japanese photography. Captures the vibrant, chaotic and radical Shinjuku district of Tokyo in the late 1960s, an era marked by student revolts, social change and political upheaval, with a subjective approach and a raw, expressive aesthetic. It reflects the tension between tradition and modernity in a Japan in full transformation, becoming a visual testimony of this era.
Japan, 1930-2012
Shomei Tomatsu (Japan, 1930-2012) was one of the most influential photographers of postwar Japanese photography. He documented the effects of World War II, the American occupation and the social changes in the country, with a raw and poetic style. In 1959 he co-founded the VIVO collective with Ikko Narahara and Eikoh Hosoe, contributing to the renewal of the photographic language in Japan, and was the forerunner of the renowned Provoke magazine.
