Serie Pleasures and Terrors of Levitation

Aaron Siskind | 1953-1961 Photographs bathers on Chicago’s Oak Street Beach, cropping them against the sky. Without knowing exactly what he was photographing, he saw in these portraits how the bodies seemed to levitate as if in a dream, an aspect that interested him and which he explored in this series.

USA, 1903-1991

Aaron Siskind (USA, 1903-1991) introduced abstraction in photography. He began his career in documentary photography, motivated by social reasons, and later became involved in abstract expressionism. His work explores different points of view on common objects, emphasizing textures, details and organic forms. He combined his photographic production with teaching in different institutions and was a founding member of the Society for Photographic Education. His work is part of collections such as the MoMA in New York or the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
